phone.

“Grant, I’m going to ask you not to say anything else until we’ve separated everyone.”

“Why? Because she made some crazy accusation?”

Mara didn’t answer.

She tapped the screen.

Grant looked at her phone.

Then he looked at me.

His expression changed.

“What is that?”

Mara turned the screen slightly toward one of the officers, not toward Grant.

I couldn’t see the picture from where I sat, but I didn’t need to.

I knew exactly what she was watching.

The feed from beneath the island.

The angle wasn’t glamorous.

That had never been the point.

It showed the stove, the center of the kitchen, most of the dining area, and enough of the living room to capture Dennis in his chair.

More importantly, it had captured sound.

Grant’s voice.

My scream.

Elaine’s laugh.

Dennis turning up the television.

Mara watched silently for several seconds.

Grant moved closer.

“What are you watching?”

The officer beside Mara stepped in front of him.

“Stay where you are.”

Grant’s face went pale.

“You recorded me?”

I finally spoke.

“I protected myself.”

He stared at me as though those four words were a greater betrayal than anything he had done.

“In my house?”

That almost made me laugh.

For months, “my house” had been his answer to everything.

My house.

My money.

My company.

My rules.

Now he said the words as though ownership could erase evidence.

Mara stopped the video.

“Grant, put your hands where the officers can see them.”

Elaine stepped forward.

“You cannot possibly arrest him over a kitchen accident.”

Mara looked at her.

“You told me you saw what happened.”

Elaine froze.

“I did.”

“Then we’ll need your statement too.”

Elaine’s confidence faltered.

Grant turned toward his mother.

“Don’t say anything.”

Mara’s eyes narrowed.

“Grant, do not instruct a witness.”

That was when he lost the calm mask completely.

“This is insane! She’s destroying my life because of a steak!”

The room went quiet.

Even Grant seemed to hear what he had just said.

Not because of what it admitted legally, but because of what it revealed.

He wasn’t asking whether I was hurt.

He wasn’t asking why I had been afraid enough to install a camera.

He was angry that consequences had entered the room.

The officers placed him in handcuffs while Mara explained that he was being taken into custody while the incident was investigated.

Grant twisted toward me.

“You’re going to regret this.”

Mara immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t threaten her.”

He tried to recover.

“That wasn’t a threat.”

“It’s recorded now too,” Mara said.

Grant stopped speaking.

Elaine began crying only after the handcuffs appeared.

Not when I screamed.

Not when she saw my hand.

Not when her son pulled me off the floor.

Only when officers led him toward the door.

“Please,” she said to me.

“You don’t have to do this to him.”

I looked at her wineglass on the counter.

“You watched him do it to me.”

She opened her mouth, but no answer came.

Paramedics arrived and treated my hand before taking me to the hospital.

Mara rode behind us for part of the trip and met me again after the doctor finished examining the burn.

It hurt badly, but the injury was treatable.

The doctor documented everything carefully, including the location
